You can just copy & paste a YouTube-link into the editor and the video will be included automatically after posting.

Smileys can be used as well. Just check out the available Smiley-extensions for WordPress which can be used inside of the (TinyMCE) editor.

I note that some YT links stay as links, while others display the graphical version.

Any idea why?

Some youtube-accounts disabled the embedding for their videos. In this case its not possible to embed them into third-party websites and can only get included as links.
