• Hi
I’m very new at this I’ve tried to read as much info as possible, but there is one thing that I just don’t understand and I’m after some clarification please.
Ok I’ve managed to get hosting on Zymic set up
    I have down loaded WP3
    I have down loaded Filezilla
I have altered wp-config sample file in copy on my pc eg changed DB user name, user, password and renamed it as wp-config
In Filezilla file manager I have made a new site “windsurftest” and filled out the user login and password boxes.
When I click connect in Filezilla it seems to work as I see “Status: Directory listing successful”
But…. this is what I dont understand
In the top right hand box in Filezilla I see the words Remote site and next to it a /
Just below this I see a picture of a folder followed by / (If I right click this folder I have the option to create a new directory. Do I have to do this if so does it have to have a specific name?)
I have selected all the wordpress files in my pc and dragged them into this blank file in the remote site box and they all seem to upload into the remote site.
But when I go to my site address https://www.windsurftest.zxq.net/wp-login.php I get a 404 error message, does this have something to do with how/where I have uploaded the wordpress files to?
I have been working on this issue for a couple of days now, at the moment I have deleted the all the files in the remote site.
I’m eagerly looking forward to some helpful replies.

  • / is usually above root for most hosts
to upload to root, most hosts use folder public_html or htdocs or similar

    Hi Samuel
So would I have to make up a new folder public_html and upload this from my pc into the remote site box and then upload all the wordpress files into this newly made public_html folder ?

Your web host should have a folder for you to upload HTML (and php) files. Their setup directions should have told you what your web root location was. Ask them if they didn’t specify.

    Sadly, many hosts are different.

I’ve just been exploring my file manager in my host Zymic and It is empty. So would I go into my file manager in Zymic and create the public_html folder in there?
Then go back into filezilla and upload the wordpress files to this new file?

Based on https://www.zymic.com/free-web-hosting/faq/ there SHOULD have been an index.HTML file in there to let you know it was the right folder. Was there?

Honestly, looking at that site, the indication is that you should not have to make any public_HTML folder at all, so … We just have to sort out their setup ??

Also a word of warning, you get what you pay for with ‘free’ sites. Things may never work quite right, and support is often a joke.

Hi Ipstenu, There may have been an index file I’m not to sure, I can’t remember what files were in there when I first tried to upload wordpress (as everything is new to me I’ve been a bit overwhelmed with whats what)plus In trying to work this out I have uploaded and then deleted wordpress quite a few times. In my ignorance I have now deleted any and all files in my Zymic account via the Zymic file manager.
Yes I am now realizing with a free site the support is limited, which makes it a bit challenging, this learning curve has given me a lot of pain but I’m sure I’ll get some pleasure and satisfaction when I finally work it out.
Ok I’m now thinking I don’t have to make a file called public_html instead I need to go into Zymic and create a file called index.html and then use filezilla to drag and drop the wordpress files into this one called index.html
Which I think should then give me windsurftest.zxq.net/index.html/wp_admin/??????
If my above thought is correct…. would the index.html file that is now sitting on my computer (the one that came with all the wordpress files eg wp_admin,wp_content, wp_includes) replace the one I have just made in Zymic when I upload wordpress?

Is my above thinking correct ?
“I don’t have to make a file called public_html instead I need to go into Zymic and create a file called index.html and then use filezilla to drag and drop the wordpress files into this one called index.html”

no – go to zymic and ask them what the root folder is
    put the wordpress files there

error 404 could appear in this case:
all your wordpress files are in the one directory, for example it’s called “wordpress”. So, you upload this directory to the root.
And then, you should tape in browser:
    windsurftest.zxq.net/wordpress/index.html/wp_admin
    instead of
    windsurftest.zxq.net/index.html/wp_admin

by the way, you don’t need to create public_html!

    sorry, I mean type this:

    windsurftest.zxq.net/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
