I’m trying to set up 2FA and running into some trouble.

    – I scanned the QR code for my account into Authy on my phone
    – Then, I entered the code into the plug-in interface and clicked “activate”
    – I got the “Error Activating 2FA” error
    – I verified that my server’s time is correct by logging into a shell and checking the time/timezone and doublechecking against time.is
    – I also verified that time time printed at the bottom of the Wordfence page to turn on 2FA also is correct, with the correct timezone.
    – I verified that my phone’s time and timezone are set correctly.
    – I tried a few more code as they changed, with no luck
    – I tried to activate with my 2nd phone (which has the same Authy account synced), no luck.

One thing I don’t think should be an issue, but might be worth noting: The server is set to PDT (UTC-7), as is the General WordPress setting. My phones however are EDT, so 3 hours ahead of the server.

    Hi @wpwpwpw987234,

Thank you for reaching out to us and for sharing the detailed troubleshooting steps you have taken so far.

    Please try the suggestions below:

    • Use a different Authenticator app like Google Authenticator or any of the apps listed in our article on Two-factor authentication.
    • Use a different browser to enable 2FA, as there could be an extension or cache causing the issue.

If none of the above options work, please send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com. You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE:It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,
    Janet

    Thanks Janet.

I was able to get it working by using Google Authenticator instead. There are completely different numbers showing from Authy when I check both apps at a given moment.

I am baffled though, because I use Authy for about 15 other sites, and I’ve never had trouble. Also, I did try using Wordfence for 2FA about a year ago, and had the exact same problem, so I don’t get it, you would think this must be something people have run into, no? Is there some weird thing about my Authy install on both my phones that makes it specifically just not work for Wordfence? I’d really prefer to use Authy rather than the Google one.

    Hi

I’m glad Google Authenticator worked for you. I’m not sure what could be causing the issue between Authy and Wordfence.

Could try adjusting the timezone on the website to EDT instead of PDT to match your phone and test to see whether Authy works? If it doesn’t work, please try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Install any pending phone or tablet operating system updates.
    • ?Make sure the authentication application is using the latest version.
    • Remove the entry for Wordfence in the authentication application.
    • Turn your phone or tablet fully off and on again.
    • Reload the Login Security >> Two-Factor Authentication page again to create a new QR code.
    • ?Try to set up 2FA again.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Janet
