    Hello Everyone,

This morning when I checked out my site, I noticed that the index page is password protected. (Note just the index page, and there is no place for a login, just a password). The rest of the site is fine, but whenever you land on the index or home page, it asks for a password. The last time I had added a post was Friday, and haven’t touch a thing since, so I can’t imagine what the problem might be. Any help appreciated, thanks!

    David.

  • if you do a “view source” in your browser, you can see this is not a wordpress generated page
I suggest contacting your host and asking what’s up?

    Thanks Samuel,

I contacted my host, and apparently I was hacked. My host changed the name of the index.php file to iindex.php, which removed the password page, but the site was without an index file. So, I downloaded the newest version of wordpress and installed the new index.php, but the problem persists. At this point, what’s the best plan of action? Should I upgrade to the newest version (its currently 2.8 or so I believe) which would replace all the files, including possibly corrupted ones if they exist, or is there perhaps a better way that you could recommend? Thanks, for the help, greatly appreciated!

I would definitely upgrade – but delete all wordpress folders and files EXCEPT /wp-content folder and wp-config.php – these I would download to my computer and scan for problems with your virus scanner – also, save any media or images on the install
you should download clean plugins and the theme you are using

upload fresh 3.0.4 files and run the upgrade on your site and immediately change your password
