    Hello!

I’m trying to set up social images for pages with SEOPress, but it is really confusing for both Facebook and X (Twitter) and X default images are not even working as I would expect.

I have a page, that has:
    – some images
    – no featured image
    – no custom OG image (Facebook Thumbnail) set
    – no custom X Card (X Thumbnail) set

    FACEBOOK:

Currently in the latest version (v7.9.2) this is what I see in Social Networks -> Facebook (Open Graph) settings:

We generate the og:image meta in this order:

    1. Custom OG Image from SEO metabox
    2. Post thumbnail / Product thumbnail (Featured image)
    3. Global OG Image set in SEO > Social > Open Graph
    4. Site icon from the Customizer

I have checked “Enable Open Graph Data” and set an image in “Select a default image”.

If I don’t check “Apply this image to all your og:image tag” SEO press will simply select the first image from the page. Why? This is not what the “We generate the og:image meta in this order” says. In your documentation there is an image of this settings page mentioning “3. First image of your post content”. According to what I experience, this is the real 3rd step, but this got removed from the live settings page. If SEOPress would actually has “Global OG Image set in SEO > Social > Open Graph” as the 3rd step, there would be no need for the “Apply this image to all your og:image tag” checkbox. If I check that, only then the actual default featured image is used instead of the first image. This is really confusing.

    X (TWITTER):

Currently in the latest version (v7.9.2) this is what I see in Social Networks -> X Cards settings:

We generate the twitter:image meta in this order:

    1. Custom X image from SEO metabox
    2. Post thumbnail / Product thumbnail (Featured image)
    3. Global twitter:image set in SEO > Social > X Cards

This is also not true but also displayed correctly only on the image from the docs. No matter how I tried, I could not set up SEOPress to display the image I’ve set in “Default X Image” for any page that contains images. Right now, if I have a page with any image, no matter what I set in “Default X Image”, SEOPress will always pick the first image from the post. I even tried checking/unchecking “Use OG if no X Cards” but it made no difference. I think users should be able to set a default X image that will be used for sharing if no custom image is provided in a page. Now, my only chance to get the default image for X on pages with images is to set a custom X image (the image that I use for default) on every single page.

    Please fix this issue!
    Thanks for your work!

    Hi,

since version 7.9, the difference with previous versions is that we don’t use anymore the first image of your post content.

Some screenshots of our UI may have not been updated on our site.

Note that we also have a known issue related to OG/X cards if you directly copy / paste a URL into the fields instead of using the modal library.

This will be solved next week with our major update.

    I hope that makes sense.

    Hi Benjamin,

    Thanks for your reply!

I was trying to tell that the problem is not that the screenshots are not updated on the docs, but that even if they are out of date – according to the current UI – they are still the valid logics behind the functioning of the current version.

I have not pasted the URL for the default images into the input fields but actually used the “Upload an Image” button to pick the default image from the Media Library. Yet, SEOPress still uses the first image from each page for the default twitter:image meta – as it is correctly shown on the image in the docs – and not using my default image as it should, according to the “We generate the twitter:image meta in this order” section on the settings page.

Also for Facebook, if I not force FB og:image with the “Apply this image to all your og:image tag” checkbox, it also uses the first image from a page and this step is also missing from the “We generate the og:image meta in this order” section. And – according to the actual functioning – the image in the docs IS the correct order, not what is currently displayed in the settings UI.

    Hi,

can you share the URL of your page please?

Also, can you provide a screenshot of SEO, Social Networks, Facebook / X tabs please?

    Thanks
