• I just installed a new blog locally – on my own machine – so I can work on themes and experiment. The only connection (so far) that I’ve used is a dial-up to Earthlink (!!)

This blog has about 10 incoming links on the Dashboard from assorted (random) blogs. I can imagine some kind linked junk if I were actually visible to the net, but not when I’m the dialup. I’m pretty sure nobody’s able to connect to me via wireless, since that’s how I’m connected to the dialup (AirPort). I can’t fathom how this happened or how to stop it.

My blogs that are up on my ISP have _no_ incoming links. Now that server _is_ on the net.

Stumped, but having no link knowledge.

  • Is your blog at htt p://localhost/ — because that is a very common address. Every local install uses it!

D’oh!. But is that accessible via dialup? Okay, well maybe things have changed since ’97. Anyway, how do I turn if off (aside from turnng on my firewall)? It seems that most posts I’ve found describe how to enhance it’s functionality – not turn it off!

Also, is this considered spam? I was about to install a plugin like Aki.

Mike, what maerk is pointing out is not that your blog is accessible to others–it’s not if it’s at “localhost”–but that there are links out there pointing to htt p://localhost, so when your blog’s dashboard asks Technorati which links are pointing to it (it being “localhost”), Technorati responds with the random links.

Oh! Now i get it. Somehow I missed this (jargon) in my searching. I assme that getting the Dashboard to stop making requests of Technorati requires a bit of coding.

I think I’m learning everything backwards: I’m twiddling with my httpd.conf constantly, but I don’t really get this whole ‘blog’ thing. ??

    Thanks much!

Yeah, localhost is a generic name. If you type in htt p://localhost on my machine, you will get my local version of wordpress!

It sounds like there are a few links out there that point to localhost, maybe they’re accidental or something, but technorati will pick them up regardless.

It’s not spam, no, so you’re OK ??
