Including product UPCs instead of SKUs

Hello. I’m wondering if there is an off-the-shelf way to include product UPCs in much the same way as SKUs are included on product pages. I tried doing a global search & replace in the source code, but I’m not sure if that’s an advisable fix. Thanks for your thoughts.
