Include events in main blog loop

We have our home page set up to show latest posts. Is there a way we can push the events posts over to merge with regular posts on this page – Include events in main blog loop. The idea is our homepage shows news and events – so would like the events to show on this page also – grouped together under an events category. Is there a way we can add a category tag in the submission and this then to display under this tag on home page (similar to how post categories work)?
