• I use din-1505-2-numeric citation style. As I learned, the in-line citation style ist not taken from csl, but has to be defined in the zotpress widget.
    I can format the in-line citation as (%num%); it shows the citation list number corretly as e.g. (1).
    When I add %p% for the page numbers (e.g. (%num%, %p%), the formatting falls back to the default format (%a%, %d%, %p%) and doesn’t show the page number.
    Is it possible to use %num% and %p% together?

    I think it should work, but I will test on my end.

    I’ve looked into this a bit more. I think most numeric styles don’t have in-text page numbers; I couldn’t find anything for din-1505-2-numeric in particular, as well. Can you give me a reference style source to go on?

    That might be the problem. I was not aware that the style could be the show stopper, because the inline formatting is not taken from the style, but from the shortcode. I’ll check it with a different style, anyhow.

    It’s not connected to the style programatically — it’s that I have no basis to go on in terms of how to present it. I program based on the style guides; in this case, I wasn’t able to find anything (i.e., it seems that, like other numeric in-text styles, you aren’t supposed to provide page numbers in the in-text part).

    Katie, as I understood it, you specify the page number(s) in the Zotpress widget just as a string (e.g. “99-101”), and you specify the format there as well using the %num% and %p% codes, e.g. “(%num%, p. %p%)”. The program just has to replace the placeholders with citation list number and the page number string I specified before, e.g. “(1, p. 99-101)”. Thus, at least in the current version, the CSL difinition is not involved at all in the inline citation, but only in the bibliography list. Am I wrong?

    Underneath the hood, Zotpress handles numeric and non-numeric in-text citation styles differently. So I would have to re-write. Since this doesn’t seem to match official style guides, I’m wondering if it’s a special case. So it’s not to do with the CSL, more about time and effort depending on frequency of use in light of not being a standard way to style in-text citations.

    So actually the page number is only used for the bibliography, and not for in-text? But in this case, what is purpose of the %p% placeholder for in-text citations?

    Plugin Author Katie

    (@kseaborn)

    No. There seems to be a general difference between numeric-based in-text citation styles and non-numeric ones, in that the numeric ones don’t use page numbers (instead, they’re provided in the bibliography). The %p% is for non-numeric in-text citation styles.

    Ah, I see, thanks.
    In general, it would be possible with CSL:

    <citation collapse=”citation-number”>
    <sort>
    <key variable=”citation-number”/>
    </sort>
    <layout prefix=”[” suffix=”]” delimiter=”], [“>
    <text variable=”citation-number”/>
    <text variable=”page” prefix=”, S. “/>
    </layout>
    </citation>

    and it’s usual at least in german technical publications. But if I am the only one requesting this for Zotpress, it’s not worth the effort.

    Yes, but I’d love to hear if more people would like this feature. And if you have style guides for the German technical pubs that I could go on, that would be great. Unfortunately I have so little time for Zotpress that I must prioritize.
