• Hi All,

I have a wordpress blog with wordpress 4.6.1. A few days ago, I had the php version upgraded from 5.3 to 5.4 and then 5.6. With php 5.3 everything worked correctly. I wanted to upgrade php to be able to install some plugins that required a higher version, hence I upgraded to php 5.4. Since then, when I try to upgrade a plugin or a language, I get the message “impossible to create directory” (or something like that since I am translating from french), just after the “unzipping” message. I do not get any information about what directory is impossible to create. I tried multiple things, such as temporarily providing 777 accessibility to all the folders. I read also somewhere that something could be wrong with the php safe_mode that should be off, but this option does not exist anymore on php 5.4 and upper. I tried to upgrade to php 5.6 without success either. What’s wrong? Nothing changed except the php version… I am stuck. Can anyone help? I can neither install nor upgrade a plugin or a language. I did not try with WordPress itself or a theme.

Were you running any security plugin during before the plugin install? Some plugins tend to modify file and directory permissions as part of a security feature they offer. have you completely tried to rename the entire plugins directory via FTP?

What do you mean by “rename the entire plugins directory”? If I do that, WordPress will not find my plugins… I tried to change the permissions to 777 of all the content of the directory, but I did not change its name. Again, everything was working fine with php 5.3, and suddenly after the upgrade to php 5.4, I could neither install nor upgrade any plugin or language…

OK there are some news. I downgraded php back to 5.3, but the problem is still there, even with php 5.3. I did also what t-p suggested, I renamed the plugin directory with ftp, which implied that all the extensions where automatically de-acivated. Then, I picked an extension randomly on worpress site and tried an automatic installation, without success, always the same message: impossible to create directory. Today, since there is a new version of wordpress that was released, I did the upgrade manually. BUt even with wordpress 4.7, the problem persists. I need help please, I want to be able to install and upgrade my plugins from the wordpress main console, it’s much faster.

I might not have the recommended setup, however, it did not work even before I upgraded wordpress… what is this directory wordpress needs to create in order to upgrade the plugins?
