• Tried to set up a new and clean WP without dead plugin folders and old database entries, but the plugin can’t import all images to the test system. It seems all photos from 2012 to June 2017 are imported, 2018 and 2019 is missing. I have root access changed the php.ini with a lot of execution time, max upload size. Copying the old “uploads” folder has still the typical problem that the library doesn’t recognize the images.

    Any solution out there?

  • Sometimes the problem is the source, though usually the symptom is that you get nothing at all a Media file import Failed.

You’ve obviously identified already that it may be that the process is timing out, but conceivably you could try and break it into small chunks and selectively import.

I’ve also used the general approach described here before, to break it up as the selective export can be a bit hit or miss and time consuming on a very large site https://tjkelly.com/blog/wordpress-import-failed-how-to-fix-it/

Check also that any changes to php.ini have actually worked.

You can move the source files to a new server location (publicly available) and try the import again, remembering to delete everything first, including menus and then purging the trash. If you want to try that, remember that you will need to edit the xml / wxr file so the importer knows where to find the new media file locations (a simple global search and replace).

Lamentably the importer doesn’t always give terribly helpful error messages, but hopefully you’ve found a fix already.
