Importing WP XML File – "This Does Not Appear To Be A WXR File"

  • I am helping a friend update their website, I believe they said they are currently still running 2.1. He used the WordPress export feature to backup all of their content which goes back about six years now, but when I attempted to import the xml file into a fresh WordPress installation it gave me this error message.

    “This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number”

    and it did not import any of their content. What could possibly be causing this to happen. Thank you for any help you can provide.
