importing widgets? avoid placing one-by-one?

i’ve done a lot of researching, and i can’t seem to find anything…but…
is it possible to make a backup of widgets and their positions and content so when i upload a theme from my local server to a remote server and import the backup, i don’t have to put the widgets back one-by-one? that gets rather tedious…
