Import… Nothing much happens

Should be the perfect plugin, and I appreciate all the configuration options (less code hacking on sources), but I am obviously doing something wrong as nothing is happening.
If I import a file from my PC I get “…imported as .” and no trace of anything in the target area (post and page both tried).
I then put a file in a directory “/var/sites/e/MYSITE.com/public_html/HTML-import-area/Articles/”
This time I got an Importer page saying
“Importing HTML files…”
ID = 0,
Old path = /var/sites/e/MYSITE.com/public_html/HTML-import-area/Articles/Use case – Copy.html,
New Path = emptyand a link on the RHS with value “https://MYSITE.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=0” with .htaccess info “Redirect https://MYSITEcom/Use case – Copy.html [R=301,NC,L]”
The HTML file in question is just an HTML fragment (Div) preceded by a <meta /> to provide the description (since you thoughtfully provided that capability I added it to my code generator!). There are no URLs within in, though I did give the old site URL as https://MYSITE.com (just in case); not updating internal links, not cleaning up bad HTML.
Pretty straightforward settings I think (though I find the working of the custom field by HTML tag obscure… web stuff isn’t the day job unfortunately) – some categories checked, no tags…
No idea what’s wrong, or even where to start looking.
Can you offer any suggestions? As you may imagine, when I can get this working it will save me a ton of work!
