Import issue: This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version

    I can’t import my export file. While importing to wordpress I got this error message:

    “Sorry, there has been an error.
    This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number”.

    What version of WordPress did you export from?

    Hi there,

    I had the same problem these days and found a solution.

    I have tried various things like creating a local Computer installation on a LAMP environment or deleted all plug-ins or installed different WordPress versions (4.4.2 and 4.3) but to now avail.

    The only thing which worked for me on all platforms was to extract the export XML file(s), upload it directly or to compress it as a GZIP file format, using 7-zip or a similar program if it is to big. After which it worked just fine, overall quite strange.
