I have had my .mp3 files hosted on my webhost for several years and am starting to get messages that that is a problem.

I happen to have a publit.io account and uploaded the podcasts there.

I placed a link to one of the podcasts where the old link was (the file was in the imports folder for this WordPress site).

The podcast is playing but I am getting a message “The requested URL returned error: 403 Forbidden”.

I haven’t gone into the setup in PowerPress in years so I am wondering if there is something I need to change in the Settings menus.

Honestly, this is a podcast I do not run anymore. I want to leave up what I have but I do not plan to post anymore. I would like to still keep it in places like iTunes, if possible.

    Thanks for your help.

PS: I have domain level protection on globally in publit.io. Do you think that may be causing the problem. I think it has to be global, and there are other files that I need to protect that way. I do hope I can fix it in PowerPress but I will ask in Publit.io, too. Thanks.

Reply with the URL to one of the media files you’re having trouble with so we can do some testing and try to figure out what’s going on.

It is playing, it is just “Forbidden” and I’m not sure what that means.

The first player is a Gutenberg audio block and the second (at the bottom) is PowerPress.

I have used the same link in the 1st player as in the PowerPress player.

I am not using Publit.io’s plugin (which would be another way of posting media from publit.io)

    Thank you.

The PowerPress media player is using this media file URL:
    [audio src="https://media.blubrry.com/travel_better/s/media.publit.io/file/tbp/TBPpodcasts/0001_12TipsForItaly.mp3" /]

Loading that URL in a web browser returns this message:

    Protected access
This file can be viewed only on specific domains.

Followed by a Publitio logo. That is likely what’s causing the 403 forbidden message.

Hi… Thanks for getting back to me.

I just tested it without logging into WordPress and the page is playing the podcast but I am still getting the 403 error on the backend.

When I wrote to the Publit.io people they got it to work on the front end, too. Here is their reply:

“So the published podcasts on the travelbetterpodcasts.com are working, right?
As I understand you are worried about external links to the files that PowerPress might use,
in which case it would be the best to ask them about it so you can add domain names to the Allowed Domains list for it to work.”

I do restrict domains and unfortunately it must be done globally within publit.io, so do you have any domains that I should add to allow my content to function properly? They also mentioned something about adding CNAMES but I would rather not because now it is getting complicated (and I think excessive) and hopefully that is unnecessary.

If all you need is for the media players to work on the website, it seems like those are working fine. If PowerPress has trouble verifying a media file URL, you can still publish a post with the unverified URL (like a 403 forbidden message), and the plugin will create the media player for the post just as it normally would.
