• We imported posts from a client’s site using the WordPress Export tool, to a new site that doesn’t use Gutenberg editor. The Featured Images are all blank, but on the old site, every post has a featured image. They don’t look like broken images, they are actually blank as if they never had them.

The images had to be manually added to the media library because the importer didn’t work for images (even though we checked the box to “download and import images”).

Has anyone else had this problem?

  • The key to this problem is “download and import images” which could have a thousand different reasons to not work. Most of those centered around ‘download’.

The way I deal with that is to FTP the media files to the new site then select the download anyway. That usually works good enough. Your mileage may vary.

Another thing I recommend is to run the Broken Link Checker plugin for about three days Then tweak that up from the 72 hour default settings to about 480 hrs (its a resource hog at 72hr but worth it).

At 480 hrs it’s pretty well behaved and will track down any missing links including image links for you.

While I’m on the subject… be careful if you or your clients are running a CDN… don’t configure the CDN until the site is moved and tested well. Else the new site might try pulling images from the CDN at first and then move a broken or missing image into place and cause you problems.

Also, a good backup of the old site is super cheap insurance in case you miss something needed.

You probably know that but other users might read this article years from now and find these few points helpful.
