Implement simple modal login – getting started

I am a complete newbie. I’ve installed and activated the plug-in, but have no idea where to go from there. For example, how do I put wp-loginout() in my theme. How would I know if my theme supports it? Can someone help – this is soooo frustrating I know it should be simple!
