imperial and metric values?

This is a very interesting question and one that I assumed would be well covered by plugins. However a quick search did not find anything that does exactly this.
The closest I could find was this one:

which might serve as a starting point for your scenario.
It looks like, to achieve what you describe will need some custom coding, for which you may need the assistance of a web developer.
