• For reasons that are too long and boring to get into, I do not use Wordfence – I prefer other security solutions. But Wordfence has one feature that I really like and have not been able to find anywhere else – “Immediately block the IP of users who try to sign in as these usernames.” Is there another plugin that does this – and preferably only this – or perhaps a code snippet I can add to funtions.php? I have looked and looked but not found one. Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Hi there,

I can suggest you a plugin that is “Login LockDown”. Please try this plugin, hope this will help.

    Thanks.

Prompt reply very much appreciated, shru21. Your advice is excellent, and I already use a very similar plugin. What I am looking for is a way to immediately block the IP of users who try to sign in as ‘admin’ and other obviously malicious login names.

Do you have a reason for allowing others to log in? I have registration/login disabled because there is no reason for someone else to log into my blog. They don’t need to leave comments and my anti-spam plugins take care of those.

Good advice MarkRH. I only allow user logins on one site – family members only. But on all my sites I get swarms of malicious admin login attempts. I already use very strong passwords, limit login attempts, recaptcha, and javascript challenge. I would like to also immediately block the IP like Wordfence allows. I really hates malicious login attempts.
