My uploads folder has many 12+ MB, 6000+ px on a side images uploaded in it.

Because of the updates introduced in 5.3, WordPress has created a “-scaled” version of these images to use as the “original image”,

When I do a search with Imsanity, it seems to only find the “-scaled” version, reporting a size of (2560 x 1440) for example when I know that image is 6200 px wide.

Is there any way I can get the plugin to search the actual original uploaded images and not the scaled versions? It really is necessary for me to reduce the size of this folder. Thank you.

Thanks for your question @zelencomm, that’s a good one!

At this point in time, Imsanity does nothing with the “original” image, and only operates on the 2560 version, which is known as the “full” size in WordPress.

That is partially because the original image should not be displayed anywhere on your pages, nor should it be used by plugins for any purpose other than generating new thumbs/sizes–at least that was the intent of the core WP devs when they implemented the scaling feature in 5.3. Naturally, plugin/theme devs can do whatever they like with the original, even if it’s bad for performance ??

It is my intent, based on requests from other users, to build a tool to completely remove the “originals”, so you’re the first person that has asked to resize them instead. Would completely removing the originals be a good solution for your site also, or would you prefer an option to scale the originals instead?

Yeah removing them is fine also, since the “-scaled” versions are there and can be used.

My expectation to resize them was mainly motivated by the line from the plugin description “provides a bulk-resize feature to selectively resize previously uploaded images to free up disk space.”

This led to me think that it would target the uploaded image (‘previously uploaded images’) and that it would help for freeing up disk space as opposed to page speed. You’re correct that the images in question are not being displayed and are not slowing down the site – my objective is only to free up disk space taken by these unused huge originally uploaded images. Unfortunately any disk space savings on the scaled images are trivial compared to what these uploaded images are taking up.

The idea for your upcoming tool sounds great and I look forward to using it!

You’re right, freeing up disk space IS the primary goal of Imsanity, so thanks for reminding me ?? The unfortunate reality is that I don’t have as much time to work on this plugin vs. our main plugin, EWWW Image Optimizer, which IS primarily focused on site speed.

So it’s always a balancing act between the two, but I’m getting close to a spot where I can work on my todo list for Imsanity again. Definitely hoping to get a new Imsanity release out next month sometime.

@nosilver4u I’m super excited that you still have a goal of implementing the ability to delete the bloated oversized original images. I’m working with a small customer right now that accidentally uploaded a ton of 13MB+ images and the problem is exactly as the OP has described. We now have scaled versions and no longer need the HUGE files, but they are now wasting a bunch of space with no way to do anything about it. Your solution is going to be extremely helpful to a lot of folks with disk-limited hosting.

    Thank you!!

@nosilver4u Nice plug-in. I just ran it and checked the “delete originals” button. But I noticed that all of my originals are still in place. These images were all uploaded before I had installed your plug-in. I thought Imsanity could remove them. Am I understanding wrong?

@clinecom please start your own thread as not to spam the OP with notifications. When you do so, check the media library in list mode, and see if Imsanity detects the original images in the Imsanity column.
