• Resolved BHD

    (@bhd)

Okay, I realize that I am very new to WordPress, but after spending hours searching this forum, I am stuck.

Following the directions to upload a site header image, the image will not appear. I sized it as recommended at 1000 x 288. It is only 110kb in file size. I have set permissions on uploads to 766 for the images folder, and I can “see” dozens of the same image that I attempted to upload on my server, but no image is displayed on my blog.

Sorry to ask a very newbie question, but I’m at a loss and need the gentle guidance of someone with experience.

    My new blog: https://www.bootedmanblog.com

    Thanks!

  • I can’t see any image in the source of your site’s header at the moment. Are you sure you haven’t removed the header image via Appearance->Header?

esmi, thank you for your reply. I just uploaded the header image again, just to make sure that I didn’t remove it from before when all I saw was a big empty box with a red “X” in it.

    Again… nada… nothing. No image.

btw… now that I have re-uploaded the header image, all I see is a huge box with a red “X” in the upper left. It appears this way on both IE and Firefox. That’s why I took it down before, because it apparently is reserving space for something. Perhaps it is a problem with my web hosting service. I have been concerned about the host’s server being very slow. Could that be it? The image is being called but not displayed because the server is too slow to bring it up, even though the file size is only 110kb?

Check your uploads path in Settings->Media. It should be blank in most installs.

esmi: my upload path in Settings->Media is blank.

Have you checked, using FTP, that the images files are being uploaded to https://www.bootedmanblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/?

esmi, thank you for your diligent follow-ups. Yes, as mentioned in my original post, the image that I want to have shown as a header appears exactly in the folder that you specified. In fact, it appears 14 times, which is how many times I have tried to upload it today. The system seems to change its file name with image sizes of crops that it is making all by itself (without showing me those changes) — but they are ALL there! Weird, huh? It won’t display a one of ’em!

In fact, it appears 14 times

Did you check using FTP? Or just via the Media Library?

I checked via my FTP client. I logged on, navigated to the images folder, opened it, and counted. The images are there, but do not display.

I am independently asking my web host if they are having server issues, as well.

Well, it’s not possible to navigate directly to https://www.bootedmanblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/BHDMusewp14.jpg – which is the url for your current header image. I’m getting your 404 page.

Esmi, I sincerely appreciate how hard you are trying to help me.

I FTP’d to the site and can see the image name BHDMusewp14.jpg in the exact location that you say it is in. It’s there! However, like you, when I click on the link directly, I wind up on the error page.

Further, I uploaded an image for my first WordPress blog post
    https://www.bootedmanblog.com/2012/04/23/soft-launch-of-new-blog/

and can see that image in the same folder. However, it won’t display, either.

I have no idea what’s wrong. The only possible reason why this is happening is that I have the domain for the blog hosted as a subdomain for a website. Perhaps that is the problem, and I need to contact the web host for answers about that.

I am giving up for the night… try again tomorrow, and if my web host can’t help me, and despite as hard as you have tried, I may just abandon WordPress and go back to Blogger. At least that was working, despite the awful new GUI that Google foisted on me.

Try switching to the default permalink structure and renaming your current WordPress .htaccess file.

esmi: thank you for continuing to work with me.

I switched to the default permalink structure.

Renaming the current WordPress .htaccess file? To what? I tried deleting it completely, then reloading … still doesn’t work.

I put it back in, reloaded, still doesn’t work.

I even re-wrote the first blog post and re-inserted an image for it. The post shows, but no image, even though the image appears in the folder when I FTP and look at it.

I am at a complete loss for what to do next, but am open to any more suggestions. Thank you.

Update: my web host, Hostgator, inserted some additional code in my .htaccess file that now makes images appear when using I.E. to look at the blog, but not Firefox. I am working with them to resolve that issue. It turned out to be a situation that the web host can help me with, and not something with WordPress, albeit confusing. Thanks again. I will close this thread, as I consider it resolved. Thank you for your help!

I, for one, would be very interested in the .htaccess file additions that your host made…
