    Hi Guys,

So I am new to wordpress, but not to website development. I’m a student, and I’ve recently been given access to a student societies website, my access is limited though.

I was trying to upload an image and the image would upload but appear as a blue question mark. The images were jpegs, i tried different sizes and different methods of uploading. Nothing worked, and I was never able to view the image on my site.

I looked around the forums and the solution for those people had more or less to do with what folder the images were actually uploading to on their server. I zero access to this however. I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things I can try before escalating this to my faculties IT department.

  • Do you have access to the server? Most often this is a permissions problem with or in the uploads folder.

No, the server is managed by the IST department in my faculty.

Technically, it’s a sub site. I’ve read that the problem could lie in the uploads folder. I’m wondering if there are any other places this problem might coming from? Since I don’t have access to the server, I want to make sure I’ve throughly vetted everything on my end before asking for help.

I’m getting the feeling it’s probably out of my hands though!

The normal debug is to disable all plugins and switch to the twenty fourteen theme. You can do that without access to the server.

I got really excited that that might work, but it didn’t ?? Also the site doesn’t have any plugins.

I had the schools theme up… actually the school updated to wordpress 3.8 at some point last year and the site defaulted suddenly to the schools theme. No one was around to take care of the site when the update happen.

Thinking maybe something went wrong when that update occurred.

Please post a url showing the blue question mark.

When you go to that link you get

    Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2014/01/sociologyposter.jpg on this server.

That means it is a permissions problem.
