    Hello –

I’ve been using Retina 2X for a very long time, set to PictureFill, however I recently noticed that sometimes the images do not load upon initial page access when viewing a page with IE11 (on Windows 7 x64). They only load on a subsequent browser refresh (i.e. pressing F5).

This does NOT occur on FireFox, Safari or Chrome. It only occurs on IE11, and I only started noticing this recently after the more recent updates to Retina 2x.

In all cases, I’m using the PictureFill setting of the plugin. I’ve tried re-setting the plugin to IMG Rewrite then back to PictureFill, but to no avail. I’ve also tried on a number of different client machines and different websites that use Retina 2x Picturefill, with and without server caching, clearing the browser cache, etc, yet all combinations seem to exhibit this sporadic image-display problem on IE11.

Here’s an example of what I’m experiencing (try using latest IE11):

    1. Go to: https://thespanishred.com
    2. Then click items on navigation bar e.g. Blog, Wineries. Those load blog category archives: the images for the archive listing sometimes do not appear.
    3. Hit the F5 to refresh: now the images appear.
    4. NOTE: I’ve also experienced this when opening up a specific post: the images within the post sometimes won’t appear initially, but after F5 they will.

Has anyone else noticed odd image display behavior on IE11? Any ideas on what may be causing this?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Again –

Following up on this, I discovered more information: when viewing a site with the latest IE11 running on Win7x64 with non-retina display, only the @2x images are being downloaded. But with any other browsers on the same non-retina computer (Chrome, Firefox, Safari), the regular images are being downloaded.

Further: I’m wondering if (at least part of) the problem may related to the “picturefill.min.js” that is included with the plugin. The current Retina 2X plugin comes with “Picturefill – v2.2.0 – 2014-12-05” – this has the problems noted earlier. However, if I replace it with the previous version (e.g. “Picturefill – v2.1.0 – 2014-10-07”, the “problem with initial load on IE11” I describe above does not occur (however, the @2x images are still being downloaded always on IE11 on non-retina). I also get those improved results (as I did with prior version) if I replace with the latest “Picturefill – v2.2.0 – 2014-12-19” from GitHub.

So, I’m wondering if there’s some sort of picturefill and IE11 on non-retina compatibility peculiarity happening. Is anybody else experiencing similar with IE11 on non-retina?

As always, thanks for your help.

    Hi WPMonkeyATL!

I can confirm this bug and have brought it to attention here: https://github.com/scottjehl/picturefill/issues/453

I hope they’ll fix it before v2.3.0 is released ??

Thanks for testing it with v2.1.0 as it works as a temporarily solution!

    Hi Christoffer –

Thanks so much for tracking down the issue! Great to hear you were able to pinpoint the problem within picturefill.min.js. I will wait until the picturefill v2.3.0 beta finds its way into the general release, it seems like a fix is forthcoming.

    Thank you again, cheers.

    Hello Christoffer –

I just upgraded to the latest WP Retina 2X (3.2.4) which includes picturefill.min.js v2.2.0 – 2015-02-03, and I experienced the same unusual problems as noted above in IE11.

I then went to GitHub to get the very latest picturefill.min.js v2.3.0 – 2015-03-23 (officially released just a few days ago), and then installed this in the “js” folder of Retina 2X: the problem no longer seems to appear in IE11.

So it seems picturefill v2.3.0 may have addressed the underlying cause that you identified in your comment above, this is very good news!

Thanks for your help in identifying the exact root cause, looks like picturefill 2.3.0 now includes the solution.

    Hey WPMonkeyATL,

Great news! Now I should inform the WP Retina 2x plugin author ??

    Thanks for you help!
