I’m trying to determine the best way to handle images, size-wise.

I have images that can be fairly large, which I usually use in full-width sliders. Those some images may be also used on pages and posts.

After importing them, I edit size and scale them inside the Media Library. Problem is, if I go to create a new full-width slider after having reduced the size and scaled an image for use on a page or post, I’m concerned that it won’t work if resized back to the original size; say, going back to a width of 1920px from a previously re-sized 795px width.

I’ve reviewed pages in the Codex, but haven’t found this topic addressed. And, I’m not entirely clear on sizing options in the ‘Attachment Display Settings’ area of Full Size, Medium or Thumbnail. My understanding is that WP automatically creates those three sized images each time an image is imported into the Media Library. But how does that integrate with how those three images may change if one were to re-size and scale an image???

    Thanks,
    RC

Would it help if you added a custom image size for use in posts/pages?

Then WordPress would scale/crop the image for you automatically, but you’d still have the original size to play with for your slider.

    Maybe….

    But first, help me understand.

When we upload an image, does WP actually save three versions PLUS the original? Or, …..

Right. Your original plus the three stock sizes all get saved.

You can add additional custom sizes that will be created in addition to the original set (so you’d have five instead of four).

In your case, I’d recommend a custom size that is the full width of your page/post content area with soft cropping (which is the default) to maintain the aspect ratio. Then you can display that for your posts and use the full size original in your slider.

    No manual scaling required!

    Thanks Chad, appreciated.
It’s one of those obvious things that WP explains in a round-about manner. You have made it quite understandable.

    Thanks again.

No problem, glad to help ??

If you see this, would you mind hitting “Resolved” in the dropdown on the right? ??
