• I’ve been using Jetpack for a while now, and I just recently noticed that our Facebook feeds are not consistently picking up the Featured Image from a post and instead will pick up our footer image, which is on a dark background on our site, making the image unreadable on Facebook.

Here are URLs to my site and FB:
    https://www.darientimes.com/
    https://www.facebook.com/DarienTimes

    Example posts from today:
    Obituary: Barbara Oddo-Del Gatto
Members of the #Darien high football team became “Poster boys”
#Darien politicians face off at LWV Candidates Night

Any ideas why this would be happening? All the posts I’ve run through Facebook Debugger have come back with and image specified for Open Graph.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

When you share a post on Facebook, or when Jetpack Publicize publishes a post to your Facebook page, Facebook crawls the page and looks for Open Graph meta tags in the head to build a complete post preview (with an image, title, description, …).

Jetpack automatically creates these Open Graph Meta tags for you, and looking at your site, the Open Graph Meta tags are there and are created properly.

As you mentioned, Facebook Debugger also sees these tags when crawling your posts.

Since Facebook is usually the first one to crawl your posts after you’ve published them, the problem could be caused by some slow loading times the first time a post is accessed.
Do you use a caching plugin on your site? If not, it might be worth trying something like WP Super Cache or CloudFlare, and see if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

We don’t have a cacheing plugin installed, but use Varnish on our server instead.

It might be worth running a few tests in your server configuration to see if Varnish is the problem here, and how fast the first page load is on your site.

Let me know how it goes.
