I have the Twenty-Eleven theme. I managed to disable the right-click or control click so that people can’t steal my images that way, but if you just click on the picture, you’re taken from the page and into a screen where it is much larger and by itself. From there, someone can right-click and steal my image. Is there a way to disable the image from opening up when you click on it? I am using the child theme.

  • Unfortunately, there’s no way to prevent people from downloading images from any website. Disabling right click doesn’t do much in that way and it annoys many users, some of whom depend on it for accessibility reasons.

Try this – in Firefox, under Tools, go to Page Info – then click on the Media tab – there’s a list of all the images on the page – and a button to save them.

Watermarking and/or using lower res images is a better way to discourage copying.

That’s discouraging. Even watermarking doesn’t work if people know how to use photoshop. There is some way to mask your photos somehow so when a person clicks on it, they’re not really opening the photo. Are you familiar with this?

In fact, the Photo Protect plug-in is supposed to do just that, put a layer over your photos. But it doesn’t appear to do be doing that. Maybe I’m overlooking something.

I don’t know of any 100% fool-proof way to prevent people from copying things on the internet except not putting them online in the first place. If a good solution existed, it wouldn’t be so hard to find :). It’s just a reality of how websites work. Photographers I know use watermarking and low-res photos which does seem to discourage copying.

Thanks for the input. I figured my photos wouldn’t look good with a more prominent watermark, but I’m going through one by one and replacing them with a larger, centered watermark. That will have to do it. The photos are copyrighted, so if I catch anyone using them without permission, I’ll have legal grounds, especially since it states it clearly on my website.

In answer to your initial question, the reason it opens to a new page containing just the image is that the picture itself is wrapped in a link, sending people to the attachment (image, PDF, video…whatever really). The way to stop pictures from opening in a new page would be to go through and edit your pages and posts and select the images and just select ‘Remove link’ from the toolbar above the edit post area.

To stop this from happening in the future, when you’re uploading or attaching a new image in a post or page, the pop-up window will have an area that asks where you want to ‘link’ the image to. Just select ‘None’ and it should save that choice as the default.

As WPYogi stated, there is no foolproof way to stop people from taking your images and disabling right click does less to stop people and more impairs accessibility of your site.

THAT was the answer I was looking for!! Thank you, thank you! I went through and changed every photo to one with a better watermark and now I have to go through them all again. LOL But you solved the issue, my friend!

You’re very welcome! If you can marked this thread as resolved I’m sure that will help people who come by looking for similar information in the future!

    Glad to help!

Will do. I finally just updated everything. It just became more important to protect my photos, as I’m going to start selling prints, so you’ve been very helpful!

Congratulations on selling prints, that’s exciting! And welcome to WordPress!

Oh, I’ve been using WordPress for maybe close to 10 years? I just never knew that about the link. I consider myself a geek of sorts, but there is always something to learn. I haven’t sold any prints yet, as I’m just starting to market, but thanks very much. I’ll be doing festivals and will eventually sell from my sight. My specialty is pet photography, but I do a little of everything. ??
