Images not working in multsite installation

I’m using multisite configured for subdirectories. If I upload an image (haven’t tried any other sort of media) to the main site, it works fine. If I upload an image to one of the child sites I get a broken link – except when I go into edit the image within WordPress then it shows up.

If I attempt to go to the image url I get a 404 error. I’ve looked at the permissions and they are set as suggested. I’m at a loss as to what to look at now. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Here’s a directory site I’m working on that will give you an idea of what is happening. This is happening not just in the theme but with the all variations of images within the ACP.
