• Images on my blog posts are not showing up. The only thing you can see are the alt texts. The images only show up on the posts on the first page of my blog’s home page. But if you go to page 2 or 3 then every single post has no images throughout the entire post, including the feature image. Why? How do I fix this?!

  • Are you sure these photos physically exist on your server? It you see grey squares instead of images they aren’t there (or at least thumbnails aren’t there).

Something had to change before that happens, like a new plugin, a move from one hosting to another, etc.

You can see the alt texts where each picture is supposed to be. So they aren’t grey squares. Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing on my site https://drive.google.com/file/d/138sheibNV0qb9tWjFRj89-sQ-30dzYxV/view?usp=sharing

I did change themes a couple of weeks ago. But I changed to a new theme and then changed it right back to my old theme I originally had, which is what theme I am using now. A theme change shouldn’t make my pictures suddenly not show up. And, all of the pictures from the posts on the first page of my homepage transferred right over. So why wouldn’t page 2 and 3’s pictures show up as well?!

How can this be fixed? When I go into a post, the block is indeed an image block. See this photo: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Bm8EgL22F3iLxoyo_oDEPkz2njj-O9Vw/view?usp=sharing But why are all of the pictures not showing and it’s only showing the alt?

I meant you to look in media library in admin. Each media file has a record in site’s database like post or page. So, when you download image all this data is stored and from the point of view of a WordPress media file is just a post with attachment type. So, if you’ll delete file from server somehow it’s record will be still there and works even if the file itself is gone.

As you can see, all of the pictures that are not showing up on my site are showing no image. When I click on one of these blank images, all of the information of the file is still there – file size, alt text, title, etc. But the picture is not. Why? Where have all of my pictures gone?! How can I fix this?

It’s hard to say where and why. Is it possible that you used some plugin to optimize images and something went wrong? Look in a folder on a server first, maybe they was renamed somehow. It you have backups, you can look into them and if images are there – restore them. If – not, I suggest only manual replacement and a store of backups from times to times in the future especially before any significant changes.

I haven’t changed any new image optimization plugin in months and my images have always been there long after I did use that plugin. I think the mess up happened when I switched themes and then went back to my old theme (I hated how the new theme looked!)

I do have backups. And I saved a back up before I changed themes. I also had to restore a backup that I had because I had a lot of custom CSS that I didn’t want to lose.

Can you please walk me through how to look for the images in my backups in order to restore them? And how to actually restore them?

I believe this started after I did the restore of the January 14th back up pictured here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13RM1hNwawy7Z9fXJPkTKeDdNGbvmM0kr/view?usp=sharing

Backups are are a bit different on different services and I don’t know what you can do here. You need to look through “uploads” to see if they have lost files. If they are there and this backup system will just add them into old files, it should be OK. If this system can delete new files in a process you better know it beforehand. Sometimes hostings have this option.
