    Hello,

WordFence seems to have a recurrent problem blocking images on a site including in Media dashboard since very long time now and solution was always to comment out “Options -ExecCGI” in .htaccess of uploads folder.

Even if the reason is “bad” behavior of other plugins, the problem should be easier to solve from WordFence options by whitelisting any “culprit” plugin that seems easy to detect as putting stuff other than images under uploads….

In addition, changing .htaccess is never a long term solution as WordFence will overwrite it with its own settings at first occasion and problem will come back.

Please, provide us a long term solution here in a reasonable time period or I will just uninstall WordFence from that site coz in final I just want to run my small WordPress site with no fuss !

Sorry if I am a bit upset writing this help request but it took me days before finding the reason of the problem, not being a professional webmaster…

Thanks a lot for your help

Hello @ecollart and thanks for reaching out to us!

Are you seeing these blocks in Tool > Live Traffic? If you are, you can manually click on the block and whitelist the action from there.

If you are not, you could try Learning Mode as well.
From the Wordfence Dashboard click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now perform the actions that were causing issues. This will help Wordfence learn that these actions are normal and it will allow them in the future. After you have finished performing the actions, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting. Now test to see if these actions work correctly.

https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/ is an amazing resource for learning more about the WAF and learning mode.

If you are still having issues after trying these steps, could you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Let me know if this helps!

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,

    thanks for your help !

No event appears in Live Traffic; WF was recently de-activated (test without any plugin) so it is still in learning mode after re-activation.

I will send you a diagnostic report as requested.

Hello @ecollart and thanks for sending your diagnostic report!

If its currently in Learning Mode, switch it to Enabled and Protected and then attempt the action again to see if it’s blocked in Tools > Live Traffic. If its Wordfence causing the block, we should see it listed in here. You can change the Filter to Blocked by Firewall to make it easier to see.

When did this issue start happening? Was it after updating to 5.5 by chance?

I also recommend you download and activate WP Crontrol to remove all the overdue Cron Events. There seem to be quite a few there. I recommend clearing all the Overdue ones. I would also keep an eye out on those and see if they return.

Let me know what you find,

    Thanks!

    Hello,

with firewall enabled and protected, still no event appearing in Live traffic !

I noticed the problem while running WP 5.5 but I can’t be sure it was not there before…

I’ll check about overdue Cron event but this should not be related, thanks for the notice.

Let me if anything I can do more now … Leaving firewall enabled…

    Hello

WP control is not showing me the overdue cron event so I am not sure what I must delete…

I deleted 5 ip_sec jobs but I don’t if I really need to do that as I don’t know from where they come…
No more overdue jobs in diagnostics…

Nothing to see with the WF problem…

    Hello again @ecollart

    Since you mentioned WP 5.5:
Due to WordPress 5.5’s deprecation of jQuery Migrate we have seen a number of issues where themes or other third-party plugins that were not updated in time have been suffering from Javascript breakages that can manifest issues in Wordfence and elsewhere.

It may help to install the Enable jQuery Migrate Helper plugin below and see if the issue can be resolved:

    @ecollart

After speaking with our QA team on this issue, they suggested turning off the Wordfence option Disable Code Execution for Uploads directory in All Options > General Wordfence Options. The problem is that your host’s Apache config has disabled setting Options -ExecCGI in .htaccess files.

Let me know if this helps!

    Thanks!

I had the same problem, this solved it for me: “turning off the Wordfence option Disable Code Execution for Uploads directory in All Options > General Wordfence Options.”
