• When I upload a new image, or use an existing image on a new page, the image shows as a tiny icon. I tried both jpg and png files.
The only thing I changed since the site worked was adding a post. I deleted the post and nothing changed.

I read as many forum threads as I could handle, tried all the options presented without success, and concluded I had to re-install WP.

I exported the original database, completely re-installed WP 4.8 (downloaded from WP.org), and imported the database into a new one. A quick view of “media” indicated the same problem with the default theme. (no plugins added)
I reinstalled the original site’s theme (Enigma) and nothing changed. I re-installed the minimum plugins (Page Builder by SiteOrigin & JetPack). No Change.

    Site: TheValueStrategist.com
    Sample page showing problems: https://thevaluestrategist.com/test-image-page/
Click on any of the other pages on that site and you’ll see valid images.

INTERESTING NOTE: If I go to Media, click on the image and edit it, it shows properly. editing it and saving it doesn’t change anything.

I’ll take any suggestions you can offer.

    Okay, so…
I inspected the wp-content folder and found no “uploads” folder. I uploaded the original “uploads” folder with no joy.
I checked the settings-media page and found the media file path was wrong (it was missing the “public_html” directory. I fixed that. No joy.
I re-uploaded the “new” image, confirmed that it was in the right directory. It now displays on the “test-image-page, but still an icon in the media library.
I installed “force regenerate thumbnails” plug-in and ran it. It got 1 success (the new image I just uploaded) and 8 failures (all the original images).
The thumbnail for that image in the media library is still an icon.
I tried editing the “test-image-page”, re-inserted an old image in the “older image not rendering” section. It still doesn’t have a file name (although the path is right).
Now, some images are showing and some aren’t.
What the heck is going on?

An interesting addendum. I removed the “Test Image Page” from the main menu, but it still shows up on the site.
