    Hello,
I just recently installed Smush. I typically customize the pixels on shutterstock then upload the image to WordPress media. I have smush running with the default Image Sizes = All. After I upload an image the filesize remains the same so it looks like Smush didn’t perform any action. I then run Smush – ReCheck Images & it reports “All attachments have been smushed. Awesome!”.

I then run WP-Optimize & it compresses the images I just uploaded down by an average 70%.

I notice the following in Smush settings: “WordPress generates multiple image thumbnails for each image you upload. Choose which of those thumbnail sizes you want to include when bulk smushing.”

So does above mean because I customize the image on shutterstock they don’t fall in this bucket so are not smushed?

    –Richard.

Hi @richmo, I hope you are well.

I was wondering if you are trying to Smush images over 5MB? Because that would explain that Smush is not processing them as it’s one of the limits.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Oh no. They’re small. Average around 120kb.
Bunch of them are on this page:

Is the real/new image size not reflected in WordPress UI after Smushing occurs?

    Hello @richmo

WordPress generates different versions of each image when uploading, each one is a differnet thumbnail. You should be able to see stats per image if you go to Media Librady, switch to list view and check the Smush Stats column:
    https://monosnap.com/file/2dq2Mfqxhqmv72utubbH4GB5W37veI
Can you please let us what you get there?

If images are already optimized/compressed, then optimization can be less. Also keep in mind that different optimizations methods and quality limits can be set in different plugins, thus the difference in results, which isn’t the same for any image and probably doesn’t have the same visual result as well.

    Thank you,
    Dimitris

    Hey Dimitris,
So yes I see the Smush stats column. It states it doesn’t smush the uploaded image. Instead it auto-creates smushed thumbnail images from the original uploaded image.
Fair enough. So where are these smushed images located then? Example: I upload an image called “cat.jpg” The Smush column then displays a bunch of image sizes
it created from “cat.jpg”. When I search my media library I still just have one image called “cat.jpg”. What is going on here?

Regarding Smushing/Compression or I should say the lack of …
    Using example to explain this.
    I went to shutterbox and downloaded a: 490 x 327 pixel image. FileSize=125KB
I upload it to WordPress with Smush running then checked the Smush column & see these smushing sizes below.
    Screenshot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/95dgxm7z1g8l50g/smush.JPG?dl=0

    5 images reduced by 1.9 KB (4.6%)
    Image Size: 125.4 KB

    View Stats
    Image size Savings
    FULL
    Skipped
    LATEST_POST_BOXES
    (539×303) 662.0 B ( 4.5% )
    QODE-CAROUSEL_SLIDER
    (400×260) 461.0 B ( 4.5% )
    MENU-FEATURED-POST
    (345×198) 362.0 B ( 4.6% )
    MEDIUM
    (300×300) 318.0 B ( 4.8% )
    THUMBNAIL
    (150×150) 188.0 B ( 5.2% )

How can an original 490 x 327 pixel image of FileSize=125KB turn into a 539 x 303 FileSize=662KB? So a simalar size pixel image has a 500% increase in size?
How can a 150×150 be larger than the original post smushing?

    Anyway, I then de-activate Smush & Re-Activate WP Compress & upload that same idential image: 490 x 327 pixel image. FileSize=125KB
After WP-Optimize compression it went from 125KB to 31KB maintaining the same pixel dimensions.

My initial plan was to move to premium Smush. I’ve spent a couple of hours on it now & it’s been nothing but frustration from a user standpoint.

    Hi @richmo,

You are reading it wrong. Those are savings. And they are in bytes (B), not kilobytes (KB).

Also, the free version of Smush will skip originals, so your 490 x 327 image is not optimized, which is indicated in the stats by “FULL | Skipped” row.

    Best regards,
    Anton
