• Hi there,

For some reason lots (but not all) of the images on our website have suddenly disappeared. They are no longer in the gallery and all that appears online is a blank placeholder with a question mark inside.

    A good example being here:

Can anyone help tell me what’s happened to them?

I think this has come from an error on my side where, in trying to delete a load of spam users, I deleted an admin user account, without transferring the data from that user to another user – so all the images uploaded by that admin user have been lost.

I tried contacting my domain provider at the time (over a week ago) to get a back-up dump file, which they got me. However it turns out that the restore file didn’t include the media files (only the database). After they restored the database, I checked online and all seemed fine, but in fact I think my browser was viewing the images via the cache, so they were appearing, but not actually there. It was only when I emptied my cache today, and checked our site that I realised all the images were missing.

My domain provider is saying that they do not have a back-up of the media files dating back to before the date I deleted the admin user (over a week ago). So they are saying the files are lost.

Can anyone help, please? Thank you.

If the images have been deleted and you don’t have a file backup either you made or your hosting company made, those images are gone.

You might be able to retrieve copies of the images from the browser cache. There are some tools and tutorials for doing this which shouldn’t be too hard to find via google. Alternatively you might be able to get back some of the images back by looking for archived versions of the site at the wayback machine internet archive.

Oh that’s really helpful @numeeja. Thank you! Yes, I’ve managed to get most of the images now from the link you sent. Thanks again.
