  • Hey Brendan,

thanks for reaching out! I have checked out your blog and you are right, it is a bit weird than one image is picked up and the other not. You could try to regenerate the thumbnails or even better, try using a featured image option for those problematic posts. Or just try to re-insert the image an then update the post. Also, if you would be so kind and make a screenshot of (y)our plugin settings?

    Looking forward to your reply,
    Petra

    Hi PetraP,

Thanks for the response and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

    >>> You could try to regenerate the thumbnails or even better, try using a featured image option for those problematic posts.

My current template doesn’t support the featured image option. However I temporarily switched to a theme that did support it and set the featured image and saved but that has not had an effect.

Could you please tell me how to regenerate the thumbnails?

    >>> Or just try to re-insert the image an then update the post.

With the Nissan post, I tried deleting the images (from HTML), saving, re-adding, saving again and the reloading the 50000km odometer post but still no image was displayed for the Nissan post.

    >>> Also, if you would be so kind and make a screenshot of (y)our plugin settings?

Please see the image linked below.

    Thanks again,

    Hey,

sorry for not replying any sooner. You could try to regenerate thumbnails with the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin but please make a backup before you do this (better to be safe than sorry).
Now, there is another option but it is a bit complicated:
First, go to your create-new-post page or — even better — in one of your previous already-published-posts. On the right top corner you should see the ‘Screen Options’ button; click on it for the drop-down menu to open. After that, tick the box next to ‘Custom Fields’.

Now you should be able to see a new box below the editor called ‘Custom Fields’. Create new custom field, name your image that you would later like to use it as a thumbnail for this specific post (something like “My thumbnail”), enter the URL of the image you would like to use and finish with the click on the button “Add Custom Field”. Of course, don’t forget to save this draft, or publish the post when you’re ready.

After that, visit the settings of (y)our plugin and scroll down to the bottom. The option called “Use custom field for thumbnails” should now be available, tick the box next to it, and select the value you’ve set up before (if you used “My thumbnail”, select that one).

Now, the important thing is this: the value of the Custom Field stays the same for every new post, while the URL of the image (obviously) changes. In other words: the name of the Custom Field stays the same, images change. That’s because once you set up your settings in the plugin settings (when you choose which value our the Custom Field our plugin should use for the thumbnails), you won’t have to change it again in the future. This way you save yourself a lot of time.

Once you have set this up, you just add a Custom Field with every new post, set the image you want to use for the thumbnail, while the name stays the same.

Let me know how it goes,
    Petra

    Hi Petra,

Thanks for you the advice, but unfortunately neither way worked.

    >>> Renegerate Thumbnails

I installed the plugin and regenerated the thumbnails but that made no difference (I noticed that the filename of the the Flickr image was not in the list of generated thumbnails that went by)

    >>> Custom Field

I sent up the custom field and added the full Flickr URL (starting with http) and named it “My Thumbnail”. Once saved, the “My Thumbnail” choice then became visible on the plugin settings page but selecting it made no difference the thumbnail of that post or any of the others (the setting is still set so you can see from the links in the original post).

For good measure, I tried regenerating the thumbnails again after changing the setting above but that also made no difference.

I tried creating new posts with Flickr images and it seems to be fine. I can’t see any difference between the HTML in posts where the image is detected properly and ones where it isn’t.

    Any ideas?

I’m running into the same issue. For example, on this post two of the Related Posts featured are “The Girl with all the Gifts” and “I Am Not a Serial Killer”, both of which have a featured image and an in-post image yet their thumbnails are the default blank image. I’d love a solution to this bug. Thanks!

    Hi Petra,

    I did some investigation.

In the postmeta table the _wp_rp_image entry correctly identifies the image from the posts table. I ran regenerate thumbnails and I saw the correct thumbnail ID get regenerated successfully.

The database info seems to be in order any (which would mean I don’t need to set a featured post etc) but rather that the plugin is not reading the data correctly in some case. Any idea what that might be?

Hmmmm…this is really strange. Is there any chance you could make me a guest account, so that I can take a closer look at this? You can send those credentials to support[at]zemanta[dot]com.

    Best,
    Petra

    Hi Petra,

I’ve created an account and sent you an email.

    Cheers,

I just downloaded and installed and I’m seeing the same issue as above. Please respond with the fix.

    Many thanks!
    Stephanie

    Hey Stephanie,

thanks for reaching out and sorry for the late reply. In Brendan’s care the issue was those posts were manually edited. Would you be so kind and give me a link to your blog, so that I can take a closer look?

    Take care,
    Petra
