Images in calendar view?

This calendar actually has some events on June 2, but they are not showing – they do, however, show in a calendar in a wider block. In fact, looking at the calendar, there is nothing about June 2 that stands out – you have to click on it to realize that there are events in that date. So I in fact have two issues:

• How do I force an image (or at least, a thumbnail view) to appear when there is an event: in my case, for a given day on which events happen, there is an image associated with that day.
• How do I force the events to appear in a calendar, no matter how wide/narrow it may be? Or maybe more simply, how can I force the calendar view to somehow highlight days that have events?

Note that I’m doing this on the cheap (everything free) to help a community group. So I’m not able to take advantage of any Pro functionality. I also don’t need any ticketing or login/user functionality, as the calendar is for display only.
