• Uploaded image thumbnails have not displayed in my media library since April 15, 2015. The image is perfectly visible when you click on “edit”, but back in the Media Library, the thumbnail displays as a broken link.

When I try to insert the image into a post, same thing is displayed…a broken link place holder.

I’ve been scouring the internet for 2 weeks, lots of people are having this issue, but I’m not finding any resolution. Does anyone have any insight to this? It would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • VOILA!

We discovered an old support ticket that suggested the Jetpack Photon function was the culprit and it IS!!!!

We deactivated Photon and everything went back to normal!

Hope this helps others who are seeking solutions to this issue!

Thanks for all the input everyone, I am just catching up on the thread. Unfortunately, I am not as technically skilled as “staze” in all this advanced trouble shooting, however, it sounds like everyone is experiencing different solutions to the same problem. Since we all have the common denominator that the issue happened right around the exact time of the WP 4.2.2 updated, I still feel strongly, that is the major culprit, I’m just not sure how to troubleshoot how this upgrade affected my site in particular, as I’m still having the issue ?? I’m going to contact my host again and see what I can stir up…I’ll let you know, thanks!

@staze – I just read the link you supplied above. What is Imagick? Is that something automatically installed with WP? Or is it a plugin? If it’s a plugin, I guess it doesn’t affect me, as I don’t have it installed…wish I did, then I could fix it! ??

    kbenik,

Pretty sure WP isn’t the issue. The plugin I pointed to may fix your issue.

imagick is a PHP extension that lets PHP use ImageMagick to handle graphics processing (like making thumbnails). In my case, ImageMagick was broken as described, but GD worked just fine. So that plugin (just copy and paste into a text document, install in your plugins directory, and activate through wordpress). See if that fixes your issue. If it does, you should contact your hosting provider and let them know ImageMagick is broken on your install.

FYI, GD did NOT work for Us.

    MssDidi,

That’s because your issue is completely unrelated to this thread. It doesn’t have to deal with the generation of thumbnails when a photo is uploaded. Unless I completely misunderstood the information you posted.

    @staze

Since I experienced this thumbnail problem along with the other issue I posted, I offered My input as an avenue to explore possibilities for resolution.

I realize that I am not a “linear thinker,” which is how I was able to find a solution that is related to the Jetpack Photon function.

I appreciate all of the info that you and the other posters have offered; We learned things We did not know to even consider before!

I’m sure that others will come across this thread and find options and avenues to solve their problems, too!

Thx everyone. Disabling Photon worked for me too: WP 4.3.1, 11.4.15
