Images do not display on site or media library

  • Hello,
    I have a problem with images. they do not show up on my site, they only show as little black boxes with white crosses in them in the media library. If I press edit image the image shows up in the separate window. Text is intact. I feel like I have tried everything.
    Deleting plugins
    Updating /reinstalling wordpress
    etc.
    All help greatly appreciated. This has been a problem since mid January. My site really needs its pics.
