Hi – I have a self-hosted website named https://www.bullseyebreach.com. Right on the home page, there’s an image of my book cover. This works as expected with Photon turned off. But when I activate Photon, I only see a placeholder graphic or the image nowhere to be found.

Looking at the HTML source code, without photon, the reference to the image looks like this:

    src="https://www.bullseyebreach.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/bullseyefinal-200x300.jpg"

But with Photon activated, it tries to get the image from a big long URL starting with https://io.wp.com… So something somewhere must want to make cached copies of my images over there – what’s the trick to making it work?

I do have a good login into wordpress.com.

    thanks

    That’s indeed how Photon works.

A few things could prevent Photon from caching your images, but these are the most common issues:

    • If you’re using an image hotlinking prevention service, you may also be blocking Photon at the same time.
    • If your images can’t be loaded in less than 10 seconds, Photon considers them as unavailable and will return a broken image.

I wanted to check some of your images, but your site seems to be down at the moment:

    https://i.wpne.ws/aQqe

Could you let me know once it’s up again, so I can take a closer look at your images?

    Thanks!

Woops – try it now. I had a hardware problem on one of my virtualization hosts and had to shut down a bunch of VMs. And I shut down my bullseyebreach.com VM by mistake. Sometimes I am a dork. Should be up and running now.

I’m not using any hotlinking prevention services I know of. The closest that comes to mind is a plugin named Redirection that gives me info about 404s and lets me set up 301 redirections.

Thanks. Your site is up now. However, when I tried to load the image it took more than 37 seconds for the image to load:
    https://i.wpne.ws/aRVt

That would explain why Photon fails to cache the image.

I’d suggest that you get in touch with your host and ask them to take a look at this and see if images can be served faster.

Until this gets solved, I’m afraid you’ll need to deactivate the Photon module, under Jetpack > Settings in your dashboard.
