Images appearing on Posts page but not individual posts

I fixed this by editing the post not via the usual WP Posts screen but by viewing the problem post, scrolling down to the bottom, clicking Edit, and inserting the images in the post version that appeared. In that version the images were indeed missing, suggesting that there were somehow at least two versions floating around.
