• I’ve very recently upgraded to 5.4 and found some issues relating to images.

The first is very straightforward – when making an image into a link the “Media File” button no longer works. When I click it, nothing happens.

The second, pasting content with text and images doesn’t create an image blocks for the images. The hyperlink on the image is now preserved, but I have to delete the image anyway, as I can’t modify the link on inline images any more – I can only remove the link and not edit properties such as “open in new tab”. So either I need images inside the paragraph block to be treated like image blocks again, or when I copy and paste my blogs over it automatically moves the images into image blocks so I can edit them properly.
Edit: Doing some further testing this morning, it appears that images that are in a paragraph block all of their own seem to show an edit dialog that the ones inline with the text don’t have – they just show a mini-dialog with just “width” in it. So it might be some super-specific bug where this dialog isn’t popping up when it should.

I write my blogs on another site (as that one contains my primary audience), and then duplicate over to WordPress, so I would like the process to be as painless as possible (it’s a niche site, so there won’t be a plugin to transfer content). As each blog has roughly 20-30 images, it would be very helpful for these two issues to be fixed.

  • Could you do a screen recording showing your steps to replicate as I’m unsure of exactly what you are experiencing? I recommend Loom to do that.

I just tested WP 5.4 and made an image link to “media file.” It worked just fine. On the frontend, when I clicked on the image, it opened the media file.

Perhaps try refreshing the block editor in your browser to see if that helps?

I also tried pasting text with images from Google doc to WordPress and an image block was created as expected. As for coming from another site, what software is it, WordPress?

@mapk I copy from My Figure Collection. Here is one of my blogs.

@phoenixfireball Here is a screenshot of what I get when I copy and paste the first part of the “Base” section in the above linked blog, so you can see what’s going on. The section title is just larger text, so not expecting that to carry across the formatting.

@tharglet I just copied content and images from your site and can replicate the problem. I also noticed that when I did this from Google docs, the image isn’t uploaded to the Media Library which felt rather odd.

This also explains your other problem about linking the image. I’m not sure how this image is being understood by the editor at this point. Because it’s inside a Paragraph block, it’s being perceived as an “inline image.” Inline images can’t be linked right now. To solve this, you’d have to upload each image separately from the copy/paste process.

I’ll raise this in the Github repo for developers to look into.

@mapk Thanks, the behaviour is really quirky, as an image at the top of a paragraph block does show the proper edit options, but one fully inline does not. You can have a link on an inline image… but you can’t configure it.

So my current workaround is to break the images into their own paragraph blocks, so I can get to the configuration options. Is the easiest option currently.

I’ve created an issue for this. You can follow there: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/21516

@mapk Thanks, I have now also opened an issue for the second bug against the same repo I was reporting in this thread, as it is also related to the editor.
