• WordPress site I have searched and replaced a word string that is in all post media file names: “SEO-Chester-” to “SEO-Malaga”. all image file names begin with this, but now I have done so all the images do not display on the site or in the media manager – what have I missed, I thought changing the slug would be fine, though if I actually enter the old image URL with “SEO-Chester-” in the file name it actually displays! I am confused why this would be the case, can someone explain please?

It doesn’t sound like you changed any DB values, only file names? Or if you changed DB values, you may have missed some. While image references in post content are right in the post HTML, there are other references WP uses internally. All images uploaded into the media library have related data saved as “attachment” posts. Try using the Better Search and Replace plugin to seek out other data and update it. Be sure to make a full DB backup before doing this, it’s all too easy to accidentally and hopelessly scramble things with such a tool.

@bcworkz I’m not sure, I just ran the search replace to change the string of words I wanted changed in the URLs, and it successfully did that, but the images are now missing!? What else could I search and replace? I presume it already changed the database values because that is what it does. I understand images have other attachment based data in WordPress so I tried regenerating the thumbnails as well but that had no effect.

What did you do to effect the initial search and replace? Different approaches have different outcomes, some not necessarily valid.
