• I have the WP image upload working just fine, I can see and access the uploaded via FTP after the upload. I have verified that the file permissions on the file and directory are set to 766 just like the documentation indicates but when I reference the file url in WP or via http directly i get a 403 error.

  • Have you a .htaccess file that is restricting access perhaps? Just a wild guess. I was thinking about how some people have this set up to eliminate hot linking.

To my knowledge there is no .htaccess file. I haven’t placed one anywhere in my site and I don’t see one anywhere when browsing via ftp.

chmod 777 fixed the problem on my server. Is this an error in the documentation?

    webjguynj,
What exactly did you change to 777? If I understand the permissions properly that are set by 777 then that means that folder/file is open for anyone to do anything that they like.
Also, some FTP programs don’t see .htaccess files. Other do by default, while still others will only if you set your preferences to View Hidden Files or something similar.
I will look into the documentation question. Perhaps with this popping up again, somebody else will chime in.

I have found that some hosts are just like that. It’s how it works on certain servers. On our old server, 766 worked, now it’s 755 for uploading. Bah. I just use FTP.
