Background –I am new to wordpress and am a photographer with 100s if not 1000s of images to upload and so that my space is not filled with the extra default images sizes I had set those all to 0. I upload my images at 1200 optimised to about 100k so that they just about look acceptable on a desktop and they look great on smaller devices.
My theme seems to also generate a 1024px image and I see that a hidden default wordpress also makes a 768px image. I am ok with the extra 768px image being generated to help responsiveness
    Question.
Should I set wordpress to generate an extra medium size image/thumbnail so as to speed up mobile viewing and if so what size should I set it. Also my pages built so far are all with the defaults set to 0 if I change the medium setting to a certain size if I then use force regenerate thumbnails will that add the extra new size for all my already uploaded images.
Am I damaging the mobile speed by not letting wordpress generate a medium image

Probably, yes. You should just let WordPress do its thing and create all its sizes. Any half decent host should give you more than enough disk space for plenty of images at a reasonably low price.

Thank you Jacob. I dont really use small thumbnail sizes and I already upload at 1200px and wordpress already still makes a 768px size even with all defaults set to 0 so perhaps I just need to let wordpress create a medium size for mobile screens then, but what is the best size to use – would that be what the default medium setting was (300px) ?
I said earlier that I thought my theme was creating a 1024px but just realised that is the default wordpress large setting too.
