    Hello Jordy,

At the plugin it states, “Full-size images should have a resolution of 1956 x 1200 to generate the 3 retina images required by the website.”

But, with the image optimization/disk space perspective, image size should not be more than the size of the container! So, how to reconcile it with the image size requirement stated on WP Retina 2x control panel?

For example, I use the following image sizes for my site:

    Hero: 1460 px x 360px —– upload 2x size: 2920 x 720
    Feature: 880px x 360px —– upload 2x size: 760 x 720
    In Post: 640 px x 320px —– upload 2x size: 1280 x 640
    In Post – within the text: 420px x 420 px —– upload 2x size: 840 x 840

Is it really necessary to have such a large (un-necessary) image size to use WP Retina 2x – it just adds to bloat?

I will appreciate if you can guide me how to handle the image sizes, and also keep the site as lean as possible.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi,

It’s not un-necessary, those are the ideal sizes if you want it to be perfect on Retina devices ?? But indeed, you can also optimize this a bit. You can avoid/uncheck the resolutions which are close to each other, for example, 840×840 and 760×720. You can disable the generation of one of those two in your Retina settings. The SRC-SET is clever enough to get the best image for the device, so that will be fine.

That said, don’t worry much as having too many sizes, if it’s only 2-3 files more per image, that’s alright. The most important is that the browser has enough choices to pick the best one for the device.

    Hi Jordy,

I am still a bit at loss! The container can take care of the ‘width’ of the image, but it is the ‘height’ of the image that will be problematic in the approach you are suggesting.

    For example, If I want the feature image 880px x 360px, I should be uploading a 1760px x 720px image (as a @2x image). And, for the 640px x 320px, I’ll be uploading a 1280px x 640px image. If the’WP Retina 2x’ generates the ‘normal’ size (1x) image for the SRC-SET, I am OK.

But, if I upload @2x images with sizes larger than the two-times the desired ones, then the 1x images will also have a height that will be much larger than desired!

And, if I control the height by modifying the sizes at the media insert point or through ‘style’ after inserting the images, it will distort the images (aspect ratio). Further, my ‘forced’ changes in this manner may also effect the @2x rendition!

I have no idea how to handle this dilemma.

I’ll greatly appreciate your advice or suggestions in this regard.

Actually, there is nothing you can do. Of course, you could manually add a new image size (https://soliloquywp.com/beginners-guide-to-add-custom-image-sizes-in-wordpress/) that would perfectly fit your container(s), that would even be more optimized, but does it worth it? Does it worth the time it takes, the additional generations, and space on your hosting?

It’s almost impossible to have everything done perfectly, except if you build your own theme by yourself with all this in mind. I suggest making sure it looks great to your visitors while avoiding to have a heavy website difficult to manage.
