• Hi,
this is not necessarily theme related but I found the support here very competent and helpful, so I would like your opinion on this:
I was wondering about image size and requests. I have a lot of smaller images which result in multiple requests, but if I combine them into a couple larger images, the resulting images are much larger than all the small ones combined. So what would you think is better – having many small images with more requests or using less images with a higher total mb size?

  • Hey,
What is this referring too? Are you talking about a background or something? can you post a link?

    Hi,
no, not background images, just images in general. I have a lot of smaller images beside each other so I thought combining them to one would result in less requests, but like I mentioned the total mb size of these combined images is larger than all the small ones individually combined. So I don’t know what would be better for performance.

    Hey krustv,
Sorry for the delay. This is really up to you. Typically a bunch of smaller images will load better than one giant image, but I don’t know what dimensions you’re using so I can’t really say. If you post a link it would make it easier to give better input.

    Hello Hannah,
I am referring to icon type images, size is around 150x150px. They are used for product features, similar to these ones:
    https://www.nugonutrition.com/products/free/ (the blue circles)
Each image is around 50-70 kb, and I have 4 of them. I tired combining them into two images, but then each image was 200 kb, so obviously more than 4 x 50/70.

Unless you using tons of images like that (over 30 on a page) I think it would be better and much easier for you to just use different images. For speed focus on caching and optimizing scripts.
