Image pop ups vs Opening on separate link / page

Hello everyone.
A few updates ago, when clicking on my images on my individual item pages, the pics would open up as a popup with a small “X” in the corner to close, so the consumer never left the item page. Now when clicking on the picture, it opens into a new page with just the photo, forcing consumers to have to press the back button to get back to the page to complete the purchase. I think this is an aggravating and unnecessary move, which may lead to losing sales. Does anyone have a fix for this to return back to popups on the sale page?
