    G’day there,
Firstly I am a total novice when it comes to SEO and optimization.
So I installed Hummingbird and ran a performance test. It returned a score of 46/100 for my image optimization and suggested my images need improvements. I installed your recommended Smush extension to optimize the images, after optimization I re-ran the performance test only for it to now show optimization is 17/100!. There are about one dozen images that fall into the ‘Compressing & Resizing’ category which I am not really sure what to do with.
My main question is why has the performance score dropped from 46/100 to 17/100 after optimization, and should I be concerned about this.
Also, I would like to thank you for an excellent plugin. My site was running slow at an initial performance rate of 31/100 and is now 83/100 after a few simple clicks & checks!

    Thanks
    Geoff

  • Hi @geoffrey1963,

It’s hard to say without comparing two reports. But my guess is that something on the page changed that caused this.

I’ve seen many users get confused by the Google PageSpeed recommendations regarding images (Hummingbird is using PageSpeed report for the performance scan). Often in the report you will see that the images need to be resized to save a certain amount of space. While Smush can optimize the physical size of the image, it cannot do so with the image dimensions, which is the most common issue on websites. For example, you are displaying a 1200x800px image in a 300px div frame. For this issue you would have to manually adjust thumbnail sizes on your theme.

Hope this info is useful to you. I might be able to help you more if you share two reports.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Hi Anton,
Thanks for your reply. I haven’t yet compared this to Google pagespeed for image optimization, I have only use Hummingbird so far, so I will do a google pagespeed also.
Ok I now understand what Smush is referring to regarding the images in the report, so I will look into this first and if I still need help I will get back to you with the reports.
    Thanks again for your help.

    Regards
    Geoff

    Geoff, you’re welcome!

    Best regards,
    Anton
