It *might* be related to hosting your images off site. Would you have a way of temporarily switching to hosting your images on your own domain to test if that is an issue?

All the images are hosted on the site. It was working correctly before.

Are you using CDN? If yes, Can you please test once by disable it temporirly for debugging purpose of the issue and let us know back the respose result?

Google crawls the feed created by GN Publisher for the image, but it also crawls the article page and you will need to follow the guidelines for use of images on this page: https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9607104

One of those guidelines is:

“Format your images as inline”

The featured image in your articles is set as a css background image, and I think that’s why Google is having trouble successfully identifying and using it,
