Image Gallery Image IDs & navigation

I uploaded a bunch of images to my media library. I then placed image thumbnails onto a page and linked those thumbs to their image post page. The problem comes in when the gallery navigation is used to try to go to the next and previous images. It appears that the navigation is using the post IDs to navigate, rather than the image thumbnail’s position on the page.
I guess that makes sense, however, how can I make the navigation go in the order that I want?
Is there a way to change an image post’s ID?
