I thought that when you upload an image, WP creates several image sizes from the upload. I also thought that WP ensures that the file size of an image is not large. However, in my Media Library, I have many images that are over 1 MB in size. How can this be? Thanks.

WordPress doesn’t compress or limit the file/image size. To optimize images you’ll have to use plugins.

Thanks. When you upload an image, how many thumbnails are created?

@engine44 4 Image size is generated by WordPress by default and the full-size image is included in that 4 image size.
3rd party plugins register their own image size if they need it. So a number of image sizes/thumbnails is not fixed.
